We can claim we don't condone the cruelty and torment that trillions of animals are forced to suffer through. We can claim we don't support the senseless, systematic slaughter of entire species. But if we still pay for it, if we still participate in it, then our claims would be lies. We cannot pay someone to torture another while at the same time pretending we're not demanding the torture. When we derive our pleasure from the needless pain of others, then the the fact is, their pain is our fault.⚫
Most of us would like to think that we're decent, morally upstanding people. Would our victims agree? Would they accept the fate we force on them, knowing their subjugation is the source of our benefit and luxury? If we were in their position, how might we view our oppressors? Would we gladly give our lives for their unnecessary conveniences? Or, if our lives were taken by force (as the lives of our victims are), would we die feeling our unwilling sacrifice was worth it?⚫
Just like us, those we exploit and torture want their freedom. They want their lives, their families, their friends. They do not want to be slaves any more than you or I would. So how, then, do we justify what we put them through? What excuse besides blatant selfishness can we provide to justify our immoral, atrocious actions? What makes us think that we deserve to benefit from endless genocide? When we live like monsters, how can we pretend we're anything remotely close to decent people? ⚫
If we truly disagree with the horrors we force on the defenseless, then the solution is simple: we stop forcing them to suffer. We stop exploiting them, stop requiring that they feel pain and sadness for our benefit. We stop demanding countless, needless deaths. We change for the better, and live up to our claims of decency. We must make the only morally sound decision, and live vegan.
