RIP #Pakistan The devastating explosion of today in Sehwan Sharif reminds me an assignment for National Geographic Magazine. While on assignment, you have often to share the daily routine of the people you are working on, in every conditions that they live. In Sehwan Sharif, in Pakistan, a group of dervishes (malangs) resting by Sehwan Fort. They gather together to celebrate the annual Urs of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar, a 13th century Sufi Master venerated alike by Hindus and Muslims. Born as Seyed Shah Hussain (Usman) Marandi, he later on titled as Lal (red) Shahbaz ( Falcon) Qalandar (as he belonged to Qalandria order of sufism). LOVE OF FREEDOM Kurdistan Regional Government - Iraq What if, in the beginning, there was love? That is the question this couple asks themselves amidst the metal of bombs and recycled artillery. This work at the Azadi Park in Duhok City is by Kurdish artist Adnan Shino. The ensemble is called "Freedom Panorama." Since 2013, I have conducted a large-scale photography project about the people of The KRG (Kurdistan Regional Government - Iraq) — their ability to resist, their hopes and sorrows, and the way they organize the culture and spirituality of their society. In the heart of each Kurd I encountered over the course of my many journeys to Kurdistan beat a desire for freedom. Here, love and freedom are genuine life commitments, preserved and passed down over millennia. Their inspiring story attests to the incredible capacity for resilience, renewed with each new drama, each betrayal, that I found among the Kurds, who have persevered against all odds. I could tell you one story after the other, like a narrative rosary that invokes an unshakable faith in life. Today, I thought of this statue made of iron and love that unites this couple in love as they gaze ahead with a crazy yet indestructible hope. IN THE NAME OF LOVE #Pakistan In Sehwan Sharif, in Pakistan, I spent several days covering the annual ceremony of Urs of Lal Shabaz Qalandar at the entrance of his shrine. Born as Seyed Shah Hussain (Usman) Marandi, he later on titled as Lal (red) Shahbaz ( Falcon) Qalandar (as he belonged to Qalandria order of sufism). He was a 13th century Sufi Master and he has been worshiped alike by Hindus and Muslims. .While some devotees belonging to different sect of sufism celebrate his death as his reunion with god by performing Dhmal, an ecstatic dance, others beloging to mainstream Shi'a, seek to emulate his suffering by self mutilation and slapping their chests to show their grieving. This picture is a part of my National Geographic Magazine assignment on Pakistan. A souvenir from the Arab Spring #Cairo Revolution On February 2011, on an assignment for National Geographic Magazine, I went to Cairo to cover the "Arab Spring" and the impact of the revolution on the pyramids and on the remains of the past sheltered in museums. On Tahrir Square, I encountered many opposition protesters, like this young man who was determined to make his voice heard. I took part in a revolution that was highly meditated, thanks to the numerous visual testimonies shared by the citizens on social medias. Hundreds had started to go down the streets of Cairo in January, to show their discontent and protest against a government that did not listen to them anymore. The whole political system was plagued by corruption, unemployment and a lack of liberties from which the people suffered. The revolution was underway and led to the fall of the president, Hosni Mubarak. Soon after, Tunisia, Jodan, Yemen, Libya, Morocco, and Bahreïn followed the Egyptian example: the Arab Spring was underway. Today, the situation in Egypt is still unstable: Adbel Fattah al-Sissi rules the country with an iron fist. #egyptian #egypt #revolution #arabspring #egyptianrevolution #tahrirsquare #opposition #protestor #testimony #flag #egyptianflag #man #shadow #victory #proud #picoftheday #igers #photooftheday #photojournalism #reza #rezaphoto #rezadeghati #rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan #رضادقتى#عكاس @thephotosociety
Animal Park of #Argelès-Gazost, #France After months spent wandering alone through the south of France, over the course of the four seasons as I worked on a book for National Geographic, we decided that we would share this adventure as a family during a few weeks of the summer. Our children were small (2 and 7 years of age) and we had always tried to make them understand the realities of the work of a photographer... then we had a chance to really make them a part of it! Our little girl Djanan engaged in a dialogue with a marmot who had made a break from the park and was successfully returned there by the park rangers. #France #Uzès As I undertook a photographic odyssey through the south of France for a book for National Geographic, I discovered the tiny town of Uzès near the famous Pont du Gard. One evening, I captured this instant of pure poetry, at the fountain in the center of the Place aux Herbes, in the heart of the old city. Surrounded by a gallery of arcades, this square is the site of many markets and fairs that mark the passage of the year in this town in the region of Gard. The annual Truffle Fair is the most frequented. A Sea of Birds Etang de l'Or, #France Working for National Geographic is a demanding school, on a par with the means that are provided to photographers to cover their subjects. Over several months, through each of the seasons, I did a reportage in France on the regions of the Languedoc Roussillon and Midi Pyrénées, assembling material for a book for National Geographic. I wanted to see the Mediterranean coast from the air, this tenuous border between nature and the earth, between the wild and the works of humankind. While I was in a helicopter rented by National Geographic I captured this flight of pink flamingos who had found refuge in the peaceful Camargue, a bit of arid wilderness between Arles and Saintes Maries de la Mer. DEVOTION #Pakistan I had the chance to got to Shewan Sharif, while I was doing what we used to call "a country story" for National Geographic Magazine. I met this whirling dervish , among others, during annual celebration of Urs at the shrine of Lal shahbaz Qalandar a 13th century Sufi Master worshiped alike by Hindus and Muslims. Born as Seyed Shah Hussain (Usman) Marandi, he later on titled as Lal (red) Shahbaz ( Falcon) Qalandar (as he belonged to Qalandria order of sufism)..Different sect of religion brings different ways of celebrating the Urs of Lal shahbaz Qalandar. Within this group of devotees, they dance as they celebrate his reunion with god. They whirl as a form of mystical absorption in the divine. Text written by Rachel Deghati. Photo by @rezaphotography // The Legacy of War // #Afghanistan One never gets used to war. Never. If one ever feels this happening, it is time to get away the front and its conflict, suffering and horrors. If you do not leave, and can no longer feel the fears reflected in the eyes of your fellow humans who both make and suffer from war, then you risk the breaking of your soul and the hardening of your heart. One becomes a mere being of flesh, empty of emotion and exposed to danger. I, for one, never got used to this violence.
