#Philippines Witness to this revolution, I observed how the events of 1986 brought an end to the martial law imposed by Marcos in 1972, seven years after his election to the presidency. By this time, Marcos’ regime was in its last agonies, openly contested by his people since 1983, the year of the assassination of Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, the legendary leader of the opposition, as he was exiting the plane in which he was returning after his imprisonment and enforced exile. On February 25, 1986, two victors were declared, Marcos and Aquino. This led more than a million people to participate in demonstrations on Manila’s main avenue. The barricades with barbed wire and sand bags, on the bridge near Malacañang palace, the official residence of the President of the Philippines, were the focal point. 1986 signed the end of an era, and the dawn of a new one, as Corazon Aquino took the reins of power. Corazon was to remain President until 1992 and managed to survive seven attempted coups d’état. Today, the current president of the Philippines is the son of Benigno and Corazon Aquino. Benigno Aquino III was elected President in 2010. #revolution #coryaquino #womanpresident #woman #BenignoAquino #CorazonAquino #democracy #victory #newera #manila #yellow #picoftheday #igers #photooftheday #photojournalism #reza #rezaphoto #rezadeghati #rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan #رضادقتى#عكاس @thephotosociety

International Mother Language Day #China, #Xinjiang (#EasternTurkestan). North of the #Taklamakan #Desert I was on assignment for National Geographic on Xinjiang. The famous Taklamakan Desert stretched away in front of me. I was going to take on a 370-mile-long road crossing through the vast expanse with no landmark, deprived of oasis, rocks and small shrubs, a mere succession of sand dunes. By the dried-out bed of the Tarim River, a Uyghur village was the last possible stop before the desert. As I often did while traveling, I asked where the school was. Ten students of all ages were listening to the teacher. The broken benches, the dirty walls, the rare and sorry-loo- king school books showed that no subsidies had been granted for a long time by the Chinese authorities. First, I was agreeably surprised to notice that the books were written in Uyghur. Then I quickly understood that I had been deceived. Elementary school students may have the right to study texts written in their native language, but only until junior high school where only Mandarin is taught. However, the Chinese assimilation policy for minorities is much more efficient and deceitful. Moreover, elementary school students do have the right to read and write in their native language, but their books are always made under the control of the Chinese authorities, which impose their own version of History. A tribute to Massoud - September 9th #Afghanistan Massoud and his men were getting ready to take over Kabul, when I arrived in Bagram on April 29, 1992. We had made a wishful promise years ago, while he was still fighting in mountains: "we will enter Kabul together" - and that day, this promise filled us with joy… Minutes later I was honored to sit near him on the tank that was leading all toward Kabul. Still reeling from the recent invasion of the Russian army, Afghanistan was supported by a puppet government. The formidable and much-dreaded Russian army, a hundred thousand-strong, had invaded cities and villages, cut off roads and rivers, bombarded all places of resistance. Put to fire and sword, the whole country seemed prostrate, mourning its dead. Yet, in a most absolute discretion, resistance organized itself. Willing to face the countless Russian soldiers, a young civil engineer, Ahmad Shah Massoud, had walked from one village to another, gathering together one hundred loyal men who would overcome the invading force, just as he had assured. Trained by Massoud, these Mujahedeen then transmitted what they had been taught to hundreds of others, therefore forming a strong army. As he became a real strategist, Massoud’s fight for the Afghan people changed the course of History and put an end to the Russian Empire that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall. On September 9, 2001, two days before 9/11, two men engaged in a suicide mission and dressed as TV journalists assassinated him during a final interview. Today being the 15th anniversary of the death of Massoud, I would like to pay a tribute to his unfailing resistance. #afghan #Mujahideen #tribute #leader #fight #smile #panjshir #massoud #commandermassoud #afghanresistance #friendship #resistance #man #tribute #photooftheday #photojournalism #reza#rezaphoto #rezadeghati#rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan #رضادقتى# عكاس @thephotosociety

LOVE OF FREEDOM Kurdistan Regional Government - Iraq What if, in the beginning, there was love? That is the question this couple asks themselves amidst the metal of bombs and recycled artillery. This work at the Azadi Park in Duhok City is by Kurdish artist Adnan Shino. The ensemble is called "Freedom Panorama." Since 2013, I have conducted a large-scale photography project about the people of The KRG (Kurdistan Regional Government - Iraq) — their ability to resist, their hopes and sorrows, and the way they organize the culture and spirituality of their society. In the heart of each Kurd I encountered over the course of my many journeys to Kurdistan beat a desire for freedom. Here, love and freedom are genuine life commitments, preserved and passed down over millennia. Their inspiring story attests to the incredible capacity for resilience, renewed with each new drama, each betrayal, that I found among the Kurds, who have persevered against all odds. I could tell you one story after the other, like a narrative rosary that invokes an unshakable faith in life. Today, I thought of this statue made of iron and love that unites this couple in love as they gaze ahead with a crazy yet indestructible hope. A souvenir from the Arab Spring #Cairo Revolution On February 2011, on an assignment for National Geographic Magazine, I went to Cairo to cover the "Arab Spring" and the impact of the revolution on the pyramids and on the remains of the past sheltered in museums. On Tahrir Square, I encountered many opposition protesters, like this young man who was determined to make his voice heard. I took part in a revolution that was highly meditated, thanks to the numerous visual testimonies shared by the citizens on social medias. Hundreds had started to go down the streets of Cairo in January, to show their discontent and protest against a government that did not listen to them anymore. The whole political system was plagued by corruption, unemployment and a lack of liberties from which the people suffered. The revolution was underway and led to the fall of the president, Hosni Mubarak. Soon after, Tunisia, Jodan, Yemen, Libya, Morocco, and Bahreïn followed the Egyptian example: the Arab Spring was underway. Today, the situation in Egypt is still unstable: Adbel Fattah al-Sissi rules the country with an iron fist. #egyptian #egypt #revolution #arabspring #egyptianrevolution #tahrirsquare #opposition #protestor #testimony #flag #egyptianflag #man #shadow #victory #proud #picoftheday #igers #photooftheday #photojournalism #reza #rezaphoto #rezadeghati #rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan #رضادقتى#عكاس @thephotosociety
