@rezaphotography #Pakistan, #Balochistan I was fortunate to have been able to discover the arid region of Balochistan in Pakistan while working on assignment for National Geographic. In this region, it is not only the children who suffer from the lack of educational institutions, but the entire population who have been abandoned by the ruling powers. The money from the pipeline that wends its way past their miserable habitations goes right into the pockets of the “Lords of the Punjab,” thus dubbed by the venerable Baloch chief, Akbar Bugti. Bugti was a former minister and member of Parliament who was assassinated when he tried to fight for Balochi rights. In that region, the poorest of the poor are undoubtedly the nomadic tribes, who constantly wander the barren mountains, like this young nomad girl. Text written by Rachel Deghati. Movement #France I have always been a great reader of poetry. I was raised in the Persian culture which is profoundly marked by great poets like Saadi, Hafez and Rumi, to cite only a few among so many, both from centuries past, as well as contemporaries. They are the very breath of Persian culture and society. Reading poetry has enabled me to maintain a link with my identity throughout my life, but it has also helped sustain me through many dark hours in my time as a witness of man’s inhumanity to man. The Sufi poet Rumi evokes the state of trance. I wanted to create an image of this form of osmosis between thought, beauty and the body – all this is translated into the freedom and grace of movement. The Iranian Sufi dancer Shahrokh Meskhin is a master of this type of transcendence. Text written by Rachel Deghati. Repost from @rezaphotography WORLD WATER DAY #Khvajeh Baha od Din, #Takhar Province, #Afghanistan Nourishing and vital, water is at the heart of all life everywhere. Half of all workers in the world, 1.5 billion people, are employed in sectors relating to water, and being creatures made up of mostly water, we are all linked by this substance. However, humanity is a far cry from rendering water its due and preserving it as it deserves. Twenty-two years after the creation of World Water Day by the United Nations, the crucial need for water conservation remains and each day it becomes more urgent to preserve this treasure that nature has provided. Photo by @rezaphotography Daily bath Village of Chanjon, #Rio, #Guatemala, After having crossed the mountains and plateaus, passing by small towns nestled in the valleys, we reach the tiny Guatemalan hamlet of Chanjon, consisting of but a few houses, no more than fifteen. The families animate this community, sharing their daily routines, their work tending the earth and the coffee harvest. In this rural and isolated environment, 1,800 meters in altitude, the day commences with the sunrise and the sound of a rooster crowing. The women play the role of housekeepers in the morning. Some of them among the community have chosen to be single, raising their children on their own. Members of this community of 22 families joined an association called “Asdeflor” in order to unite the strengths of each individual and to share out the products of the harvest. Photo by @rezaphotography // Wedding Night in #Afghanistan In the early 1980s, I spent over three months hiking through Afghanistan in search of Massoud, the young commander hailed as the one who would stand against the heavy artillery of the Soviets who had invaded the country with their massive armies. Consequently, I shared the daily lives of his fighters whose courage was only equalled by their tenacity. Often, we marched after nightfall to avoid being caught by the fire of enemy helicopters. The Gaze of Childhood #France At the beginning of their lives, the awakening senses of children lead them to experiment and tackle the most improbable obstacles. I love the intensity and depth with which they often perceive things and people. On this day, in the abandonment of the heat of the summer, our daughter Djanan suddenly froze, forgetting the apple she had been devouring eagerly, her gaze fixed for a long period, as if hypnotized by a scene. The minutes stretched out as I observed her drinking in what she saw, hesitating between reminiscence and discovery. Encounters #Ethiopia We made up a rather motley crew: six youths from six different continents, twenty-four young Ethiopians – some orphans, some from disadvantaged backgrounds – and assistants from UNICEF. The first group were the winners of an international photography contest launched by UNICEF and Sony and coordinated by the World Photography Association. The theme was the Rights of Children, and I was leading it, along with David Beckham. The winners won the chance to participate in one of my workshops, conducted in Ethiopia, along with twenty-four young Ethiopians who had been presented with cameras. Our happy group set off, trying to share moments that would build bridges between cultures, social classes and destinies. All of them shared this apprenticeship in photography and their view of the world around them. In a little village with houses made of beaten earth, natural light illuminates this girl’s face and intensifies the lively colors of her clothes and the rooster in her hands, transforming her into a princess full of grace, immortalized by these photographers in training. #Libya, #Tripoli When I was in Tripoli, working on assignment for National Geographic on a story about Libya, I met Rabia Ben Barka, a fashion designer. She was dressing a model in her workshop. When a poet saw this picture, she came up with these words: You seem among the indifference of your own thoughts. Your perfect body and the beauty of your features sublimate your empty gaze upon the clients avid for display. You lose a part of your humanity and you slip into the featureless life of a beautiful object. You are enveloped in clothing and inhabited by revolt. #Lebanon While covering war in Lebanon, I found that the children who lived in the Palestinian refugee camps of Lebanon played like children everywhere: They kicked balls or pretended to be soldiers, using pieces of wood as toy pistols. Over the years, though, the innocence and spontaneity of their games disappeared. As Israeli attacks increased, the sudden raids, the images of horror, and the massacres began to dominate their imaginations. Wearing hoods, they roamed as gangs in the ruins of bombed-out, deserted houses, and their weapons were realistic wooden rifle. Text written by Rachel Deghati. #Repost @rezaphotography with @repostapp ・・・ #Panjshir Province Dear friends, many of you have been asking about my books. I would like to share for the next weeks the covers of all of them in different languages and their story. Ahmad Shah Massoud, the “Lion of Panjsher”, was the principal opponent to the Taliban regime from 1996. As early as 1979, Massoud was a war leader and fought for freedom against the soviet invaders. Twenty years resistance, twenty years spent carrying the flame of liberty and attempting to install peace in Afghanistan. An intimate and realistic portrait of Commander Massoud and the Afghan resistance spanning twenty years emerge in my photographs, with whom Massoud “liked to play chess when the canons ceased firing”. A beautiful photo I had to share, please read the text. An incredible photographer and humanitarian. Repost from @rezaphotography using @RepostRegramApp - Tea Time #Algeria I had the good fortune of discovering Algeria while working on a book by Yasmina Khadra. I enjoyed a series of visual peregrinations, usually solitary ones. Consequently I attempted to gain an understanding and also convey the diversity of this people, and the complexity of a society in the process of inventing itself. Over several months, over several seasons, I wandered along a path full of intense encounters and experiences, and amazing places. In the valley of #Assekrem, in the midst of a volcanic plateau, I reached the refuge of Father Foucault, near #Tamanrasset. I love the countries where hospitality to a passer-by or traveller is far more than a mere obligation, but a matter of honor to open up your home and share the little you have. I still treasure the memory of this man’s tea, strong and sweet, that he prepared for me after a day of seeking out photographs amid the arid and inhospitable but oh so mystical plateau of Assekrem. #Pakistan I was visiting a Koranic school in the city of #Multan, province of #Punjab. I had barely walked in the door when I was surprised to hear verses from the Koran recited by dozens and dozens of girls with high voices. Aged 6 to 12 years old, the girls had been enrolled in the school by their parents, who had completely lost faith in Pakistan’s educational system. At this school, the girls learned the Koran, of course, but they were also taught the same general interest subjects that are provided in any other school. Here lies the pernicious strength of the religious fundamentalists: While knowing how to be attentive to the parents’ needs and frustrations, offering them an alternative that can compensate for the government’s failure to set up an effective school system, the fundamentalists are making sectarian religious education both widespread and necessary. Photo by @rezaphotography // Hope This is for you, women fighters on the front lines of creativity. For long hours I observed her, standing, reaching for the ephemeral inexistence of the material, in a strange face-to-face. I followed her with my gaze, as she pushed one of her slender fingers into the wet clay, playing it against her palm, hesitating over a curve, a hollow, filling it in, then taking up a misshapen clump, beginning over and over again. But that is not all... I saw her, attentive, loving, grazing the clay with infinite tenderness, smoothing out the bumps in a search for a fragile instant of harmony. A face emerged from her hands, that of an unfinished man, in the rough. Then, finally, she etched out a line, provoking the hint of a smile. At the Erbil University of Fine Arts, at the heart of the creative effervescence of students in a newly forming country, she seems to have found her place. She had resolved to begin a silent and intimate dialogue with him, her alter ego in clay that she had brought to life with her hands. I have always thought that woman is blessed with a supreme creative power, that of giving life to both things and human beings. In that moment, I remembered some of the fates of these Kurdish women—poised between struggle and grace, renunciation and creation, battlefront and hearth, shadow and light, sorrow and joy, winter and spring, between war and peace. The elders know that one must be born at least once in order to be reborn. Thus they sow the seeds of rebirth. You see, while it is woman who makes man, it is the culture transmitted from generation to generation that forges the strength and the identity of a people. Sometimes, a shadow darkens insouciance. But, here, more than ever, life is hope. Tea Time #Algeria I had the good fortune of discovering Algeria while working on a book by Yasmina Khadra.
