Photo by @rezaphotography // The Disciples of the Sun #Lauragais, #France. While I was spending several months travelling through the south of France gathering material for a book for National Geographic, I decided to spend a few of those weeks with my family on the road. As an adolescent, I had been a devotee of the painter Van Gogh and had admired reproductions of his paintings I discovered in magazines. We had an imposing volume of his works at home that we had often given to our children when they were small so that they could also be inspired by his unique sense of color. That summer, his works came to life as they discovered fields of sunflowers, disciples of the sun, that stretched as far as the eye could see. -STARFISH- Back in 2003 I was involved with Rick Smolan and David Cohen's historic America 24/7 book project which documented one week in America. It was the largest such photo project since the 1930's Farm Security Administration project which employed photographer greats like Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans. According to CBS News over 1-million images were submitted by 25,000 photographers from accross the United States. My contribution was this image at dusk of a woman relaxing in the pool of my apartment building which was directly accross the street from the old Honolulu Catholic Cemetery. The picture ran accross two pages in the National America 24/7 book and considering how many photographers there were...frankly, it was a miracle. #travelingourplanet #travelingourplanet #lonelyplanet #life #dailylife #lensculture #ig_global_people #lensculturestreets #photographyislife #photojournalist #pictureoftheday #35mmphotography #leica #leicaambassador #travelphoto #filmphotographic #capture #photoart #streetlife #picoftheday #imageoftheday #decisivemoment #jeffwidener #honolulu #hawaii #america24/7 #swimmingpool #aerialview #inslandlife #relaxing

-ON PATROL- Back in 1993 I was on assignment in Cambodia covering the UN monitored elections. The job was not without risk. Nothing is more unsettling for me then having to go on military patrol. I am no hero and always avoided anything potentially requiring a Band-Aid. I followed these scruffy Cambodia soldiers to a small village outside Battambong which had been attacked by the Khmer Rouge a few hours earlier. Usually these bandits are looking for rice or terrorized chickens and pigs. The soldier in front of me turns in the direction of distant gunfire. Though these guys were armed with AK47 assault rifles, it would not have been much help against a grenade attack which happened a few weeks earlier to some Dutch Marine peacekeepers who were injured in the ambush. #travelingourplanet #travelingourplanet #lonelyplanet #life #dailylife #lensculture #ig_global_people #lensculturestreets #photographyislife #photojournalist #pictureoftheday #35mmphotography #leica #leicaambassador #travelphoto #filmphotographic #capture #photoart #streetlife #picoftheday #imageoftheday #decisivemoment #jeffwidener #cambodia #battambong #khmerrouge #war #guns #unelections #southeastasia

-REST STOP- Indonesia was one of my old haunting grounds back in the 1990's. I had a South Korean photojournalist friend named Choo who I would often meet by chance in remote parts of Asia during major breaking news stories. A few years ago I decided to visit Choo who was based in Jakarta. We both had a passion for Leica cameras and would often spend hours discussing our photographer heroes Cartier Bresson and Josef Koudelka. There were countless times Choo and I would have our cameras, lenses and rolls of Tri-X film strewn all over a hotel restaurant dining table like two school children during Show and Tell. On our way back from lunch in a taxi one day I made this image of a woman napping on a city bus during a red light. I used my Leica M7 with a 28mm Summicron lens. Choo's Leica M3 was blocked by his smiling wife. #travelingourplanet #travelingourplanet #lonelyplanet #life #dailylife #lensculture #ig_global_people #lensculturestreets #photographyislife #photojournalist #pictureoftheday #35mmphotography #leica #leicaambassador #travelphoto #filmphotographic #capture #photoart #streetlife #picoftheday #imageoftheday #decisivemoment #jeffwidener #jakarta #indonesia #sleeping #napping #bus
--GOTHIC- One of the toughest photographic assignments I would get from my newspapers were club stories because I could hardly see to focus in the darkness or I was blinded by flashing strobes and the pounding noise was a major obstacle because I could never hear my subjects for caption information. During this particular Halloween assignment at a gothic bar in downtown Honolulu I had a splitting headache and was in no mood for thumping DJ action so I quickly motioned to this young girl with my camera and she grabbed this tiny pumpkin for some reason. It was good enough for me and I ejected myself from the crowded chaos. @rezaphotography #Pakistan, #Balochistan I was fortunate to have been able to discover the arid region of Balochistan in Pakistan while working on assignment for National Geographic. In this region, it is not only the children who suffer from the lack of educational institutions, but the entire population who have been abandoned by the ruling powers. The money from the pipeline that wends its way past their miserable habitations goes right into the pockets of the “Lords of the Punjab,” thus dubbed by the venerable Baloch chief, Akbar Bugti. Bugti was a former minister and member of Parliament who was assassinated when he tried to fight for Balochi rights. In that region, the poorest of the poor are undoubtedly the nomadic tribes, who constantly wander the barren mountains, like this young nomad girl. Text written by Rachel Deghati. Movement #France I have always been a great reader of poetry. I was raised in the Persian culture which is profoundly marked by great poets like Saadi, Hafez and Rumi, to cite only a few among so many, both from centuries past, as well as contemporaries. They are the very breath of Persian culture and society. Reading poetry has enabled me to maintain a link with my identity throughout my life, but it has also helped sustain me through many dark hours in my time as a witness of man’s inhumanity to man. The Sufi poet Rumi evokes the state of trance. I wanted to create an image of this form of osmosis between thought, beauty and the body – all this is translated into the freedom and grace of movement. The Iranian Sufi dancer Shahrokh Meskhin is a master of this type of transcendence. Text written by Rachel Deghati. -CREEPY- This is another image from my Hawaii book project highlighting the hidden parts of the state commonly missed by the average tourist. It just so happens that the Fort Shafter bowling alley snack stand on the island of Oahu makes one of the best cheeseburgers in town and thanks to a close ARMY buddy I could get access to the military base on the weekends. The thing is, every time I would dig into my fries at the table, that creepy clown would keep staring at me. One day I brought my Leica R8 camera with a 180mm Elmarit lens and balanced it with the help of a ketchup bottle cap. After taking a couple of shots I thought how weird it was that some inanimate objects generate vibes as if they have a soul...that or my cholesterol levels are rising. #travelingourplanet #travelingourplanet #lonelyplanet #life #dailylife #lensculture #ig_global_people #lensculturestreets #photographyislife #photojournalist #pictureoftheday #35mmphotography #leica #leicaambassador #travelphoto #filmphotographic #capture #photoart #streetlife #picoftheday #imageoftheday #jeffwidener #honolulu #fortshafter #hawaii #clown #creepy #creepyclown #gumballmachine #gumball
-TREE MAN- From my Hawaii book project on reclusive areas off the beaten tourist path. I was driving in the back areas of Waianae on the Island of Oahu when I saw this gentleman chilling out against a tree. My first instict was to slam on the brakes but I thought to myself "Nah...he will probably be gone by the time I go back" -- Which is most often the case. But the urge was overwhelming and I grabbed my small backup Contax TVS point and shoot camera, faithfully loaded with a roll of Tri-X film and I dashed back to the 'Tree Man'. I was amazed to see he was still shading as I first saw him. I said "Howdy" (with a big grin) and snapped the picture. The guy never spoke so I waved goodbye and returned to the car. The picture was later published in a major photo spread about my Hawaii project in the British Journal of Photograohy. #travelingourplanet #travelingourplanet #lonelyplanet #life #dailylife #lensculture #ig_global_people #lensculturestreets #photographyislife #photojournalist #pictureoftheday #35mmphotography #leica #leicaambassador #travelphoto #filmphotographic #capture #photoart #streetlife #picoftheday #imageoftheday #jeffwidener #honolulu #hawaii #tree #invironmentalportrait #contaxtvs #contax #trees #islandlife
Repost from @rezaphotography WORLD WATER DAY #Khvajeh Baha od Din, #Takhar Province, #Afghanistan Nourishing and vital, water is at the heart of all life everywhere. Half of all workers in the world, 1.5 billion people, are employed in sectors relating to water, and being creatures made up of mostly water, we are all linked by this substance. However, humanity is a far cry from rendering water its due and preserving it as it deserves. Twenty-two years after the creation of World Water Day by the United Nations, the crucial need for water conservation remains and each day it becomes more urgent to preserve this treasure that nature has provided. -BLACK MAY- In 1992 the Thai military took control of the democratically elected government of Prime Minister Suchinda which resulted in several demonstrations througout the country followed by 3500 arrests and several deaths. Known as Black May or Bloody May, the event struck a low point in Thailand's typically peacful country. I was not particularly thrilled photographing mass demonstrations at night after my Tiananmen Square episode in 1989 when I was hit in the face by a protester rock. My Nikon absorbed the blow sparing my life. But this guy had some friends so his point was well taken and I put my camera away following this shot. I came real close the following day when two sniper rounds buzzed by my head while standing on an ancient fort wall in Bangkok. A New Zealand man was not so lucky and his body lay in the street with his country's national flag draped over him. Below me was a blood stained palm print of a Buddhist Monk who was shot dead the night before. #travelingourplanet #travelingourplanet #lonelyplanet #life #dailylife #lensculture #ig_global_people #lensculturestreets #photographyislife #photojournalist #pictureoftheday #35mmphotography #leica #leicaambassador #travelphoto #filmphotographic #capture #photoart #streetlife #picoftheday #imageoftheday #jeffwidener #bangkok #thailand #demonstration #prodemocracy #civilunrest #blackmay #inyourface

The families animate this community, sharing their daily routines, their work tending the earth and the coffee harvest. In this rural and isolated environment, 1,800 meters in altitude, the day commences with the sunrise and the sound of a rooster crowing. The women play the role of housekeepers in the morning. Some of them among the community have chosen to be single, raising their children on their own. Photo by @rezaphotography Wedding and power #Pakistan, #Karachi At the Clifton Palace garden in Karachi, Pakistan, Benazir Bhutto and Asif Zardari had an almost traditional Pakistani wedding. Portrait of a pretty young girl participating to the wedding. Benazir broke with tradition by trying to keep their wedding simple. She eliminated the dowry, had only two shalwar kameez instead of the traditional nearly 51 dresses and wore only one layer of jewelry. Benazir wore a white silk tunic with gold-embroidery. Asif wore a turban and a cream-colored tunic. Asif and Benazir and their families had several days of celebration. The couple said "yes" three times, and at their wedding ceremony Benazir and Asif looked into a mirror together so they could see themselves as a married couple for the first time. Sugar was ground over their heads so their lives would be sweet. In the streets after their wedding there were 100,000 political supporters dancing, singing, firing guns in the air, and enjoying fireworks. Then, the power, the wedding with Asif, took Benazir on a different road that she didn't want at the begining. Text written by Rachel Deghati. -TIRED STATE- US Secretary of State Alexander Haig yawns as British Foreign Secretary Francis Pym looks on at the start of an early morning 1982 NATO session in Brussels, Belgium. I used to love photographing Haig when he rolled into town because most of the photo sessions were only a few minutes if not seconds in length which was always a challenge for a good picture but I always could count on Haig to deliver a great facial moment. There were many occasions when he fell asleep in the middle of ministerial meetings. One day at the Brussels Hilton Hotel I got in the elevator and Haig was coming down to breakfast with Secret Service agents. -REST STOP- A homeless man takes an afternoon nap at a major intersection in downtown Bangkok, Thailand. What I like about this picture is that this chap seems totally at peace with his surroundings as if he has no cares in the world. I used a Nikon F3 with an 18mm wide angle lens. #travelingourplanet #travelingourplanet #lonelyplanet #life #dailylife #lensculture #ig_global_people #lensculturestreets #photographyislife #photojournalist #pictureoftheday #35mmphotography #leica #leicaambassador #travelphoto #filmphotographic #capture #photoart #streetlife #picoftheday #imageoftheday #jeffwidener #bangkok #homeless #thailand #traffic #sleeper
-PONDERING PRINCIPAL-- Back in 2012 I flew down to southern Angola as part of an American NGO team who specialized in building new schools and supplying donated shoes to children. This is the principal of one of the newly-built structures which are all painted bright yellow. I quickly turned to capture this reflective moment a second before he unleashed a big grin. Thank God for the auto focus on my Nikon D700 with one of my favorite zoom lenses attached...The Nikon 24-70mm f2.8. It was a great trip to a country that is virtually impossible to enter as a journalist. I will be sharing more images from Angola in the near future. #travelingourplanet #travelingourplanet #lonelyplanet #life #dailylife #lensculture #ig_global_people #lensculturestreets #photographyislife #photojournalist #pictureoftheday #35mmphotography #leica #leicaambassador #travelphoto #filmphotographic #capture #photoart #streetlife #picoftheday #imageoftheday #jeffwidener #angola #school #africa #teacher #portrait #face #yellow #portuguese
The Gaze of Childhood #France At the beginning of their lives, the awakening senses of children lead them to experiment and tackle the most improbable obstacles. I love the intensity and depth with which they often perceive things and people. On this day, in the abandonment of the heat of the summer, our daughter Djanan suddenly froze, forgetting the apple she had been devouring eagerly, her gaze fixed for a long period, as if hypnotized by a scene. The minutes stretched out as I observed her drinking in what she saw, hesitating between reminiscence and discovery. -BLOWN AWAY- Part of my daily job as a newspaper photographer was to produce daily feature enterprise work. Sometimes this was a challenge but fortunately Mother Nature would come to the rescue as she did during this April shower on a windy rainy day in downtown Honolulu, Hawaii. Kids just love rain. I parked myself under a bank covering and waited for the 'moment'. The picture ran on the front page the following morning. #travelingourplanet #travelingourplanet #lonelyplanet #life #dailylife #lensculture #ig_global_people #lensculturestreets #photographyislife #photojournalist #pictureoftheday #35mmphotography #leica #leicaambassador #travelphoto #filmphotographic #capture #photoart #streetlife #picoftheday #imageoftheday #jeffwidener #honolulu #hawaii #rainyday #rain #lol #rainyday #umbrella #kids
Encounters #Ethiopia We made up a rather motley crew: six youths from six different continents, twenty-four young Ethiopians – some orphans, some from disadvantaged backgrounds – and assistants from UNICEF. The first group were the winners of an international photography contest launched by UNICEF and Sony and coordinated by the World Photography Association. The theme was the Rights of Children, and I was leading it, along with David Beckham. The winners won the chance to participate in one of my workshops, conducted in Ethiopia, along with twenty-four young Ethiopians who had been presented with cameras. Our happy group set off, trying to share moments that would build bridges between cultures, social classes and destinies. All of them shared this apprenticeship in photography and their view of the world around them. In a little village with houses made of beaten earth, natural light illuminates this girl’s face and intensifies the lively colors of her clothes and the rooster in her hands, transforming her into a princess full of grace, immortalized by these photographers in training. -CARL LEWIS- This picture of Olympic Gold Medalist Carl Lewis was taken at the poorly-lit Heysel Stadium during the 1988 Ivo Van Damme Memorial Athletics Meet in Brussels, Belgium. Photographing night sport events can be pretty tricky especially with manual focus glass but thankfully I had a Nikon 200mm f2.0 lens at my disposal which was cutting edge at the time. I was one of the few photographers around who had one which gave me a huge competitive edge. Years later in Hawaii, Carl Lewis was interviewed at The Honolulu Advertiser newspaper where I worked as a staff photographer. I made a print of this image and gave it to him. Carl looked at it and whistled ... "Man do I look young there". #travelingourplanet #travelingourplanet #lonelyplanet #life #dailylife #lensculture #ig_global_people #lensculturestreets #photographyislife #photojournalist #pictureoftheday #35mmphotography #leica #leicaambassador #travelphoto #filmphotographic #capture #photoart #streetlife #picoftheday #imageoftheday #jeffwidener #carllewis #trackandfield #olympiclegends #olympics #sportshero #athlete #longjump #sportscelebrity
-ANTWERP, BELGIUM- I have a love hate relationship covering sports. The action is always fun but the pressure of deadlines always limits me to what I can creatively capture. Sometimes in the old days I would have only 10 minutes during a soccer game and if the action was at the end of the field, well you get the picture. During the 1983 European Champions' Championship in Antwerp, Belgium, I did have more time thanks to a messenger who returned the film back to the office for filing. This picture of tennis legend John McEnroe getting swamped for autographs from kids was taken with a brand new Nikon 200mm f2.0 lens which was a technical marval at the time. Perfect for tennis, and night sports. #travelingourplanet #travelingourplanet #lonelyplanet #life #dailylife #lensculture #ig_global_people #lensculturestreets #photographyislife #photojournalist #pictureoftheday #35mmphotography #leica #leicaambassador #travelphoto #filmphotographic #capture #photoart #streetlife #picoftheday #imageoftheday #jeffwidener #tennis #johnmcenroe #tennislegend #europeancommunitychampionship #antwerp #belgium #sports #mcenroe

-PESHAWR, PAKISTAN- This portrait of a grinning Afghan refugee was taken in the frontier town of Peshawar near the Khyber Pass in 1988. I was on assignment doing a story on the Afghan refugees living in Pakistan when a bunch of local tribesmen jokingly egged this chap on to have me photograph him. It was because of this light moment that the full character of this man came through which I photographed with a Nikon F3 and the wonderfully sharp Nikkor 85mm f1.4 lens. #travelingourplanet #travelingourplanet #lonelyplanet #life #dailylife #lensculture #ig_global_people #lensculturestreets #photographyislife #photojournalist #pictureoftheday #35mmphotography #leica #leicaambassador #travelphoto #filmphotographic #capture #photoart #streetlife #picoftheday #imageoftheday #jeffwidener #portrait #pakistan #asia #middleeast #afghan #afghanrefugee #toothless #smile
